A greener, healthier Chania: measuring our impact
June 2025
As part of VARCITIES, each Pilot implemented a portfolio of Visionary Solutions aimed at transforming public spaces into healthier, greener, and more inclusive environments. Through co-creation with local communities and the integration of digital, social, and nature-based innovations, the pilots addressed specific urban challenges related to accessibility, well-being, and sustainability. To understand the effectiveness of these interventions, a comprehensive set of indicators (Key Performance Indicators or KPI) was monitored throughout the project.
The data collected offers valuable insights into the local impact of the solutions implemented, helping to inform future urban development strategies both within and beyond our Pilot.
This is our impact in Chania!
Recreational and cultural value of green spaces
Mobile Urban Living Room (MULaR), VARCITIES has transformed Chania’s public spaces into vibrant cultural and recreational hubs. Over the course of the project, the MULaR hosted 8 socio-cultural events with more than 150 activities, attracting over 10,000 citizens. These events ranged from storytelling for children and environmental workshops to film screenings and sports activities, demonstrating how nature, culture, and recreation can come together to enrich daily life.
Improving accessibility
Currently, over 45,000 residents live within walking distance of recreational areas, and the MULaR has the potential to expand access to another 11,000 people by activating degraded or unused public spaces.

>45.000 residents have walking access to existing recreation areas

11,000 additional residents could have walking access to recreational areas if MULaR travels to degraded public spaces
Similarly, while 11,000 residents already have cultural facilities nearby, the MULaR could bring cultural programming to as many as 48,000 additional citizens, bringing culture and recreation closer to communities and turning everyday spaces into new meeting points.

Currently >10,000 residents have walking access to existing cultural facilities

> 48.000 residents could gain access to cultural events on foot if MULaR travels to all possible public spaces in the city that could host it
More evidence-based planning
VARCITIES delivered a wealth of data to support evidence-based urban planning in Chania. Over 624,000 environmental measurements per minute were collected, covering temperature, humidity, air quality, and noise levels. More than 2,500 trees were catalogued with detailed vegetation data, while health and lifestyle surveys from 1,200 citizens captured insights into wellbeing, social relations, and urban living conditions. Together, these datasets provide an invaluable resource for shaping healthier, more inclusive, and resilient urban environments in Chania.
The Chania pilot shows how physical transformation, community participation, and targeted monitoring can come together to create healthier, more inclusive urban spaces. By introducing the Mobile Urban Living Room (MULaR) and Sensors on bikes and bike-stations, public areas were revitalized into dynamic cultural and recreational hubs, accessible to thousands of residents on foot. These interventions brought cultural programming, nature, and social life directly into neighbourhoods, making recreation and culture part of everyday urban experience.
