A greener, healthier Novo Mesto: measuring our impact

June 2025

As part of VARCITIES, each Pilot implemented a portfolio of Visionary Solutions aimed at transforming public spaces into healthier, greener, and more inclusive environments. Through co-creation with local communities and the integration of digital, social, and nature-based innovations, the pilots addressed specific urban challenges related to accessibility, well-being, and sustainability. To understand the effectiveness of these interventions, a comprehensive set of indicators (Key Performance Indicators or KPI) was monitored throughout the project.

The data collected offers valuable insights into the local impact of the solutions implemented, helping to inform future urban development strategies both within and beyond our Pilot.

This is our impact in Novo Mesto!

Increased recreational or cultural value of green spaces

By combining smart monitoring with cultural programming, the Novo Mesto pilot recorded a significant increase in both visitors and organised activities. Between December 2022 and February 2023, visitor numbers peaked, while from June to August 2023, cultural, sport, and community events flourished, resulting in an impressive 411 activities overall. This confirms that the revitalised green areas are attracting more people and encouraging more active use.

Green-related social service provided to population

The pilot also greatly expanded the provision of green-related social services to citizens. More than 80,000 m² of green and recreational spaces have been improved or newly created, including lawns, pedestrian paths, children’s play areas, and forest trails. At the same time, 37,700 m² of natural areas have been preserved, while 35,900 m² of supporting infrastructure, such as parking, an equestrian centre, and a public swimming pool, have been upgraded with a focus on community well-being. Post-intervention surveys confirm residents perceive a tangible improvement in their everyday environment

Increased connectivity to sports facilities

Accessibility was a key focus, particularly in enhancing connectivity to sports facilities. The route between the swimming pool and the equestrian centre has been optimised, cutting the distance by 64.6% (from over one kilometre to just 355 metres) significantly improving ease of movement and encouraging active use of these facilities.

Citizen participation in and co-creation of the design, implementation and evaluation of project interventions

From modest beginnings in 2021, where just 30 people joined early workshops, involvement has expanded to nearly 200 participants in 2024.

Across all co-creation activities, 245 different citizens have contributed their ideas and feedback, shaping interventions and reinforcing a sense of shared ownership over green spaces. This evolution reflects a growing civic engagement and commitment to sustainable urban transformation.

Greater inclusion of people with functional disabilities

By actively involving groups and individuals with functional disabilities, the pilot ensured that more voices were represented in shaping green spaces. Out of 30 organisations contacted, 20% directly included or represented people with disabilities, while individual participation rose from 7.47% at the start to 38.75% by the fourth measurement.

On average, nearly one-quarter of participants were people with functional disabilities, marking clear progress in accessibility and inclusive engagement.

Increased job opportunities

The pilot had a measurable impact on local employment opportunities. A total of 40 new jobs were created, with almost half of these linked to social activities such as swimming instructors and trainers. These roles not only provide economic benefits but also strengthen the social fabric of the community, highlighting how green infrastructure and recreation can generate both environmental and socio-economic value.

Our pilot in Novo Mesto demonstrates how investing in green infrastructure can deliver wide-ranging benefits for people and the local economy.
