May 2022

Eurac Research is writing a full paper to be submitted at the SDEWES Conference 2022 (Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems, 6-10 November 2022, Paphos – Cyprus) entitled “Combining Strategic Planning Tools for Co-Creating Resilient Urban Solutions”. The paper will be presented within the special session on Local climate planning for climate-neutral and resilient cities.

The paper aims to present the results derived from the application of the PESTLE methodology in the activities of the VARCITIES project, as part of the Work Package 3 (“Problems Identification and design of visionary solutions”, led by Eurac Research) dedicated to identify local needs and challenges affecting the pilot areas all around Europe. The analysis were performed using the outcomes of the 1st and 2nd co-creation workshops, organized during the year 2021 to engage and involve local stakeholders.

The final objective is to present a knowledge base to guide and support local administrations by providing a practical application of the PESTLE methodology as a model to follow in the strategic planning of sustainable cities. Within the SDEWES Conference 2022, the results related to the identified drivers, obstacles and challenges will be presented and the development of the combined PESTLE plus SWOT analysis will be described, showing its application in the pilot cities of Chania (Greece) and Skellefteå (Sweden).
