Gżira’s VS3: a community garden ready for use at Stella Maris College!

December 2024

In March 2024, our Pilot team in Gżira organised a co-design workshop at Stella Maris College to support the development of a third location for their Visionary Solution 3 in the courtyard of the school. Students and teachers highlighted the wish for more greenery within their school environment, and a community garden where they could engage in gardening and other educational activities.

Now, in December 2024, the Gżira Pilot Team has successfully turned this vision into reality by transforming an underutilized area in the school into a thriving co-created community garden!

The public entity Ambjent Malta, through its nursery, supplied twelve different indigenous and endemic shrub species propagated from native old stock found across the Maltese Islands. Additionally, herb and vegetable plants were included, bringing the total number of plants to 90. During a planting workshop at the school, the local NGO ACT guided students on proper planting techniques and plant maintenance.

This intervention, carried out with active student participation, has significantly enhanced urban biodiversity in Gżira while promoting environmental education and community engagement.
