VARCITIES at the WHO European Healthy Cities Network Annual Event

December 2023

On 21–23 November 2023, the ISOCARP Institute represented VARCITIES at the 2023 Annual meeting of the World Health Organisation (WHO) European Healthy Cities Network in Utrecht. The conference saw the participation of 55 cities and 19 national networks committing to 12 actionable points for sustainability, health, and well-being. In the face of global challenges, the conference clearly highlighted the emerging role of cities as key actors for innovative solutions promoting health and well-being. The adopted recommendations reflect the determination of cities to move towards a well-being economy, incorporating innovative, local solutions. These recommendations will propel cities towards achieving net zero emissions, sustainable youth employment, and inclusive societies.

These recommendations supporting a shift toward a well-being economy, prioritizing planetary, human, economic, and social well-being align with the Joint Manifesto we published together with our sister projects, calling for initiatives that offer visionary and integrated solutions at the intersection of social, cultural, digital and nature-based solutions (NBS) to increase the health and well-being of citizens.

The event showcased inspiring examples of city innovation, are available in the Book of Abstracts of the Conference, including VARCITIES’ abstract.
